Valk

The Valk ( Dutch for falcon ) is a small open sailing boat with a gaff sail and fixed keel. It is built in large numbers in the Netherlands and used as a leisure, hobby, sport and regatta boat.

properties

The boat is a gaff rigged sloop . The 6.5 m long and 2 m wide hull is made using a chine construction and has a fixed keel . The rudder is attached or - less often - pushed through.

In the regatta version, the sails consist of a mainsail with an area of 12.6 m², a genoa with 7 m² and a spinnaker with 14.5 m². In addition to the mainsail, a jib of 4.3 m² is common for cruising.

A crew of at least two people and a maximum of three is planned for regattas .

The shallow draft of 80 cm and the easy-to-put mast make the boat particularly suitable for the Dutch inland waters. It is not very suitable for open areas due to the low bow.

A somewhat smaller gaff rigged keelboat of Dutch origin is the zestienkwadraat (16 m²), which sails in Germany under the name BM-Jolle .

history

The boat was designed by EG van de Stadt in 1939 and initially built at Bruynzeel . By using his then new invention of a durable boat building plywood, industrial sports boat construction was born in the Netherlands.

In 1940 the Valk became a national class in the Netherlands . Since then these boats have been built by a number of different shipyards.

Since the 1970s, the boats have also been made with polyester hulls . This design is unsinkable and easy to care for because of the use of aluminum for the mast and spars . Under the name Polyvalk , it is used by boat rental companies and sailing schools.
