The BM-Jolle is a sailing boat that was built in 1926 by Hendrik Bulthuis (1892-1948) in the Frisian Bergum am Bergumer Meer (hence BM in the German name of this type of boat).
Although the term dinghy nowadays usually a dinghy called the BM-Jolle is an open, gaffelgetakeltes keelboat . The (6m version of the) BM dinghy has been a Dutch one-size-fits-all class since 1931. There the boat is called "zestienkwadraat" (16 m²).
Originally, the BM-Jolle was designed as a boat for simple self-construction in strip construction, but was mainly built by Dutch boatyards. The strips are nailed across both the frames and each other. For this purpose, iron nails were often used, after their corrosion in some cases the stability of the hull is no longer given.

A total of 4452 BM dinghies were measured, and an unknown number were built unmeasured (as touring or charter boats). Especially the replicas with polyester hulls are not capable of being measured. In Germany, the number of BM dinghies is likely to be in the hundreds.
regatta
There are only a few supra-regional BM dinghy regattas in Germany. Exceptions are the Rhine Week , where there is usually a separate class rating (13 BM dinghies took part in 2006) and the BM Classic Open regatta of the Münster sailing club , which was founded in 2010 . In addition, individual BM dinghies take part in regattas of the Friends of Classic Yachts and other regional events. Since 2013, the Maibowle, which is held at the Krefelder Segel-Klub 1981 e. V. will be held, again a separate BM rating.
