Font Magica or completely Font Magica de Montjuïc ( Catalan for Magic Fountain of Montjuic , on Spanish Fuente mágica de Montjuic ) is a fountain at the south end of Avenida Maria Cristina in the district of Montjuïc in Barcelona .

Location and history

The fountain is located at the foot of the Palau Nacional and, like most of the buildings around it, was erected on the occasion of the 1929 World's Fair in Plaça d'Espanya . The name is due to the interplay of shapes (water), colors (light) and sound (music). On an area of 50 × 65 meters, around 2,600 liters of water per second pour out from over 3,600 nozzles.

The fountain designed by Carles Buïgas is located in the original location of the Quatre Columnes ( four columns ) monument . The four pillars represented the four red bars on the Catalan flag . At the time, they were a symbol of Catalanism, which had been increasing since 1892, and were demolished in 1928 under dictator Miguel Primo de Rivera .

Font Màgica (1929)

When Buïgas submitted his plans only a year before the world exhibition , the project was felt to be too daring for the short period of time. They were finally implemented with the help of more than 3000 construction workers and the first presentation took place on May 19, 1929, the day before the exhibition opened. The fountain was badly damaged during the civil war and was out of order until 1955.

The light show has also been accompanied by music since the 1980s. Together with the Museu Nacional, the fountain was completely restored on the occasion of the 1992 Olympic Games, which were taking place not far away. The music program covers a wide spectrum; it ranges from classical and modern music to music from well-known films.
