The Quatre Columnes on Montjuïc in Barcelona

Les Quatre Columnes ( Catalan for "The Four Columns", in Spanish : Las Cuatro Columnas ) are a group of four Ionic columns at the foot of Montjuïc in Barcelona . They were built in 1919 on the site where the Font Màgica (Magic Fountain) fountain now stands below the Palau Nacional (National Palace ). The pillars were torn down in 1928 and rebuilt in 2010.

Meaning and outline

Demolition of the pillars in 1928

The pillars were designed by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch , who had also been President of Mancomunitat , the Catalan Parliament , since 1917 . The pillars related to the four bars of the flag of Catalonia , the Senyera , and became a symbol of Catalanism . The originally planned figures on the pillars were not realized by Puig i Cadafalch.

Because of this clear allegory , the pillars were demolished in 1928 under the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera . Primo de Rivera systematically had all public symbols of Catalan nationalism removed so that they would not be given any meaning during the 1929 Barcelona World's Fair . Where the Quatre Columnes previously attracted attention when looking at Montjuïc , the huge Font Màgica fountain , whose water features are illuminated in color in the evening , was created to complete the main axis of the exhibition grounds .

For propaganda reasons, the exhibition village originally planned as Iberona was also renamed Pueblo Español (Spanish village).

reconstruction

The rebuilt pillars below the Palau Nacional (2013)

In 1994 the city administration decided to rebuild the pillars. However, the decision was not implemented. As a result, the Xarxa d'entitats cíviques i ciutadanes dels Països Catalans , a network of around 80 citizens' initiatives, launched a campaign in 2003 to restore the work of Puig i Cadafalch. The demands of the initiative were supported by the Catalan Parliament. On June 27, 2008, the city decided to rebuild the pillars in their original location, and by the end of 2010 the work was completed.

The pillars of the Autonomous University (UAB)

In 1999, the Valencian artist Andreu Alfaro erected four pillars on the campus of the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Bellaterra. They have become the symbol of the university and are seen as a reminiscence of the Quatre Columnes .
