Poble Espanyol ( Catalan for Spanish Village , Spanish : Pueblo Español ) is an open-air museum in Barcelona , Spain . On the occasion of the world exhibition in Barcelona it was built in 1929 on an area of ​​49,000 m² at the foot of the Montjuïc mountain.

The Poble Espanyol was built in 13 months and should be torn down again after the world exhibition. The success during the world exhibition led to the decision to continue operating the museum. To this day it is a magnet for tourists from all over the world.

The 117 buildings are, not always true to the original, replicas from all eras, cultures and regions of Spain. The “village” with its streets and squares is intended to show a characteristic, architectural image of the various Spanish architectural styles. The buildings include a Romanesque monastery , a church , a town hall , parts of palaces and town houses . The Poble Espanyol is entered through a replica of the Gate of Saint Visitation ( Puerta de Ávila ), part of the city ​​wall of Ávila .

In craft workshops, goods are produced and sold using traditional techniques. You can see, among other things, a glass blowing workshop , a pottery and workshops for the production of musical instruments , toys and jewelry . Local dishes are offered in several restaurants. Folk dances , music and customs are presented at events, and art objects are shown in exhibitions .
