Fountain in Bar-le-Duc

The fountain in Bar-le-Duc , a French town in the Meuse department in Lorraine , was built in 1757. The fountain on the Place de la Fontaine was added to the list of architectural monuments in France in 1930 as Monument historique .

The baroque fountain, which stands in the place of a previous fountain from 1465, supplied the residents of the upper town with drinking water . For a long time, the water was brought in via an underground pipe made from hollowed-out tree trunks.

The construction of the fountain by Duke René I in 1465 is reported on a white marble slab .
