Forbidden Dimension is a Canadian horror punk band from Calgary that was founded in 1988 by Tom Bagley, aka Jackson Phibes. Initially founded as a solo project, the band developed over the years into one of the most popular groups in the genre, and enjoys cult status among genre lovers.
history
Forbidden Dimension was started as a solo project in 1988 by the illustrator Tom Bagley, who was previously active in the band Color Me Psycho. With the help of a drum computer he recorded three demo albums. Musically, Bagley, henceforth active under the stage name Jackson Phibes, sees his influences primarily in garage rock of the 1960s, as well as in heavy metal and early punk of the 1970s. Thematically, Forbidden Dimension follows old horror B-films and pulp magazines , also underlined by the illustrations that Phibes does himself for the band. Phibes also mentions the Misfits , which he came across in 1982, and the English band Screaming Dead as a formative influence on the lyrics and appearance . He sees both as the forefathers of horror punk, also due to the exclusive horror theme.
From a solo project, Forbidden Dimension evolved into a real band and the following three studio albums were released by Cargo Records . However, the bankruptcy of Cargo Records' Canadian subsidiary was a setback for the group. From 1998 to 2005 Jackson Phibes was henceforth in the band The English Teeth (not to be confused with the US-American band of the same name), and directed his main focus on it. Forbidden Dimension was not dissolved, but the project was quiet. In 2000 the compilation A Coffinful of Crows was released , which offers recordings of the first three demo albums that were only released on music cassette. After the end of the project, the staff from the English Teeth formed the basis for the revival of Forbidden Dimension. Work on it began in 2006 and in 2007, ten years after the last studio album, A Cool Sound Outta Hell was released by the Canadian label Saved by Vinyl . Four years later the album The Golden Age of Lasers was released . Both publications were accompanied by favorable reviews in the press.
For the band's 25th anniversary, Creepsville '13 - A Tribute to Forbidden Dimension , a tribute album with the participation of 19 music groups , was released in 2013 .
