The Ford skyscraper is a condominium occupied high-rise building on the outskirts of Saarlouis with 65 meters height. The building was erected in the course of the settlement of the Ford plants in Saarlouis in 1968 and is a well-known landmark beyond the city .

History and use

The skyscraper is located in the Beaumarais district of Saarlouis at Wallerfanger Straße 150 on the border between Saarlouis and Wallerfangen . In the place of the later high-rise building stood Beaumarais Castle from the 17th century, which had been largely destroyed by bombs in World War II in 1942 and demolished in 1953.

The non-profit Bau- und Siedlungs-Aktiengesellschaft Saarlouis (GBS) had the 23-story building built in 1968 with 141 residential and 7 commercial units . The new building had become necessary because the automobile manufacturer Ford decided in the mid-1960s to set up a new plant in Saarlouis, and additional living space was needed for the workers employed there. After the establishment, GBS sold most of the units to individual owners, including seven traders who joined together to form an owner association - which is still managed by GBS .

In 2012, an urgent need for renovation was identified and an extensive energetic renovation of the facade with aluminum surface, glazing of the balconies and an optical and technical upgrade, which began in September 2013 and was completed in October 2014. The investments of 4.1 million euros were pre-financed by the Saarländische Investitionskreditbank , which for the first time granted the community of owners credit as a whole in a pilot project.

The name-giving neon sign for the Ford automobile company attached to the facade is visible from afar.

reception

In 2013, GBS Managing Director Engelbert Feld described the self-contained, large-scale facility as “a village in itself”. The property is particularly striking because the area is largely undeveloped. In 2017, the Saarländischer Rundfunk called it the tallest building in Saarland and a “landmark that everyone in Saarland knows, a village on the outskirts of the city” with 400 residents.

In 2016, the high-rise was the location for the crime film In Truth: Mord am Engelsgraben , which was broadcast on ZDF in 2017 .
