FORMOSAT-1 (福爾摩沙 衛星 一號, until December 2004 ROCSAT-1 ) is an earth observation satellite . It is operated by the Taiwanese space agency National Space Organization and is the first satellite of the Republic of China (Taiwan) .

The launch took place on January 16, 1999 with an Athena-I rocket from launch pad 46 of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida .

The main task of the satellite is to observe the oceans and explore the ionosphere .
