Death Valley Junction (also Amargosa ) is a small settlement in the Mojave Desert in Inyo County , California at the intersection of California State Route 190 and California State Route 127 east of Death Valley National Park . Less than 20 people permanently live in the settlement at an altitude of 622 meters.

Death Valley Junction is home to the Amargosa Opera House and Hotel , where resident Marta Becket has been performing dance and pantomime shows on stage since the late 1960s. The hotel is open and the shows continue in the opera house, but beyond that the settlement is in a dilapidated condition. There is no gas station and only one restaurant. The only restaurant called T&T Cafe is part of the Amargosa Opera House and Hotel but is not operated by the hotel.

The settlement is located in the eastern Death Valley in the southern Amargosa Valley near the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge . Shoshone is to the south . The shortest distance to the Nevada border is approximately 8 km to the northeast.

Administrative documents show an attempt by the administration of the Shoshone tribe of the Timbisha to acquire an area of 29 km² in the area. These areas include areas for residents and are officially permitted to perform traditional ceremonies. It is unclear whether these efforts, documented in the Congressional Record , were successful.

history

In 1914 the Death Valley Railroad drove for the first time between Ryan and Death Valley Junction. It transported borax until 1928, when its mining ended. From 1923 to 1925, the Pacific Coast Borax Company built U-shaped buildings in the village, which were kept in the Spanish colonial style. The architect Alexander Hamilton McCulloch planned the city. The main purpose of the city is an intermediate station on the railway line for the workers of the borax mining. After borax mining ended, workers and their families gradually left the city, turning it into a ghost town by the late 1940s .

In 1967 the travel dancer Marta Becket came to the then very devastated city. She was fascinated by the possibilities of the ruined theater that was built in the year in which she was born. On a shoestring budget, she first rented and then bought the complex.

On December 10, 1980, the place was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District .
