Forest path in the Iloo forest

The Iloo Forest , formerly also called Ilohforst , is a 1000 hectare forest in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district in Schleswig-Holstein .

description

The forest area is located between the villages of Timmaspe and Böken . Around 1900 the forest area was only 356 ha, of which around 100 ha burned down in 1913. After the Second World War, the forest stock suffered greatly from deforestation for reparations to the English and for fuel requirements. During the land consolidation , areas were added to the forest. In addition, the Schleswig-Holstein Landgesellschaft acquired abandoned agricultural land that was reforested by the Neumünster State Forests.

history

Before the afforestation, there was the Ilohheide in the area, which, with its swampy subsoil, favored the formation of fog and heavy night frosts in the region. It contained thick layers of stone that made it difficult to cultivate. In 1876 the province of Schleswig-Holstein acquired 298 hectares and drained the area with several ditches into the Höllenau . For refracting the Ortsteins of the terrain which has been on a part Rigolpflug used which was drawn 12-16 horses up to 50 cm deep plowing.

In the rest of the area, the Ortstein was so deep that another method was used: the border culture according to Carl Emeis . For the cultivation and afforestation of very moist heathland and locations where the Ortstein was lower, Emeis developed a system in which parallel trenches were created at a depth of 0.90 to 1.00 m at a distance of eight meters from trench center to trench center were. The remains of the Emeis cultures can still be clearly seen today. The work in the Iloo Forest was carried out by prisoners from 1878 to 1880. In 1895 another 40 hectares were acquired, where the Ortstein was broken up with a steam plow to a depth of 75 cm.

Flora and fauna

Fast-growing conifers that were planted by humans dominate the Iloo. A male eagle owl is native to the forest area. A female eagle owl was released there in August 2012 .

Others

The area belongs to the state forest of Neumünster. The administration of the area is carried out by the Schleswig-Holsteinische Landesforsten ( AöR ) in Neumünster .
