School duration
The advanced training to become a forest technician takes place through a four-semester technical college course at the technical school for forest management in Lohr am Main . The school year starts at the beginning of September. Attending the Bavarian Technical School is free of charge. Students have to provide for their own board and lodging. The holidays are based on the Bavarian holiday regulations.
Course content
Since 1888, foresters of various careers have been trained in Lohr am Main, Bavaria. This tradition has been successfully continued with the introduction of the forest technician degree since 1981. Since November 1981, 24 forest technicians have been trained at the forestry technical school, initially every two years. Between 1986 and 1999, forest managers were admitted to technical schools every year. A technical college course is currently being offered again every two years. In the meantime, more than 400 graduates have successfully attended the technical school for forestry.
In 1986 the "Association of Forest Technicians e. V. “founded. The aim of the association is to strengthen forest technicians and their professional profile. The Association of Forest Technicians is a mouthpiece and supporter, and works on forest policy level for the benefit of graduates and potential employers. The association has voting rights in the technical school advisory board of the technical school for forest management. As of July 1, 2018, the association was renamed "Forsttechnikerverband eV".
Apprenticeship in Austria
Since June 1, 2016, the forest technology apprenticeship has been offered as a training attempt in Austria. The new apprenticeship with an apprenticeship period of three years enables apprentices in agricultural and forestry companies to be trained as forest workers. The training can initially begin until May 31, 2022. The main focus of teaching consists of the acquisition of key qualifications such as methodological competence (independent decision-making, development of solution strategies, a sense of responsibility, customer orientation), knowledge of competent environmental protection, recognition of health, accident and environmental hazards in forest areas and knowledge of relevant protection - and safety regulations. Knowledge of the economic and ecological effects of forest work and the importance of the forest for people, animals and plants are also part of the training content.
