Fort Nelson is a dependent settlement (English population center ) in the Canadian province of British Columbia . The city is the settlement focus of the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality and is located east of the Rocky Mountains in the Peace River Region on Alaska Highway kilometer 454, at an altitude of 410  m .

The forest that surrounds the city is part of the great Canadian taiga . In addition, the Fort Nelson River was named after the city.

history

In 1805 the North West Company established a trading post in what is now the city. Fort Nelson was named in honor of Horatio Nelson , a British admiral.

The original award of local self-government for the municipality took place on April 8, 1971 ( incorporated as Village Municipality ). With the reorganization of the Northern Rockies Regional District in the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality , the municipality lost its independence in February 2009.

Demographics

The census in 2016 showed a population of 3,708 inhabitants for the settlement, 5.5% less than the last census. 2011 still resulted in a population of 3,902 inhabitants for the settlement. The population of the settlement decreased by 13.6% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in the province of British Columbia grew by 7.0% at the same time.

traffic

The CANAMEX Corridor runs through the municipality . This trade route was defined under the North American Free Trade Agreement and is used for transportation between Canada, the United States and Mexico.

It is also on the Canadian section of the Alaska Highway, Highway 97 . In addition, Highway 77 begins in the settlement . Together these two then run to the northwest, only to separate after about 25 km.

Fort Nelson Airport, built in 1941, is about 7 km to the northeast of the municipality .
