history
The community is based on the establishment of Fort St. James in 1806. The fort was founded by Simon Fraser , who explored British Columbia for the North West Company . John Stuart and James McDougall were two of Simon Fraser's assistants who checked the usability of the area of rivers studied for transport. The fort and the adjacent lake were named after these names. The fort became the property of the Hudson's Bay Company when the North West Company was acquired by them. Forts St. James became the center of New Caledonia, Canada , a fur trading district of the Hudson's Bay Company.
Although there was little fur trade in this area, the fort existed as a trading post until 1952.
