Fort Thompson is a village in Buffalo County in the US state of South Dakota . Fort Thompson has 1,375 inhabitants on an area of 32.6 km². It is the largest settlement on the Crow Creek Indian Reservation .
history
Fort Thompson was named after the Indian agency agent, Clark W. Thompson (1825-1885). Fort Thompson borders the "Big Bend Dam" and the reservoir "Lake Sharpe", one of the four Missouri reservoirs that were created by the United States Army Corps of Engineers according to the Pick Sloan Plan. Planned in 1944 for flood protection and hydropower. Work on the dam and lake was completed in the 1960s. The most fertile areas around the village of Fort Thompson were flooded. Parts of the village had to be rebuilt because the dam wall was being built in the area. This loss of farmland made the situation of the Dakota and Lakota Indians living there worse. Fort Thompson is the seat of administration for the Crow Creek Indian Reservation. Fort Thompson poverty is often compared to that of a third world country. Most of the residents are unemployed. In the vicinity of the village is an archaeological site, the "Fort Thompson Mounds". It is an Indian burial site from the 8th century. This is in the area of the Crow Creek Indian Reservation. It has been a United States National Historic Landmark since 1964 .
