Foswiki ( Free and Open Source Wiki ) is a structured wiki programmed in Perl , which is mostly used as a collaboration platform , team portal and / or knowledge management system in company intranets. The software is open source and is subject to the GPL license .

Foswiki emerged from the split of the community from the TWiki project. As a result of the TWiki fork , Foswiki is a further development of the TWiki software.

properties

The following functionalities are characteristic of Foswiki:

  • Version control - every change to the content is recorded by means of RCS and is traceable
  • Finely adjustable assignment of rights for individual users and user groups
  • Expandable markup language
  • TinyMCE -based WYSIWYG editor
  • Dynamic content generation with macros
  • No additional database system - all content is saved directly in files
  • Numerous plug-ins for additional functionality
  • Web applications with forms
  • Skin- enabled user interface
  • Web feeds and email notifications

architecture

As a structured wiki, Foswiki allows information to be changed via input fields that are stored on the individual pages. Foswiki saves data in text files (and does not use its own database ) and logs the modifications with the RCS version control software or in separate text files for each version of a topic. The revision data and other meta information are embedded in the wiki pages using a database query language similar to SQL .

surface

The Foswiki interface is completely skin-compatible and is mapped using template engines and CSS . The system supports internationalization ( I18N ), multiple character sets and encoding in UTF-8 URLs. The interface has been translated into Bulgarian, Chinese, Czech, Danish, German, English, French, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish and Spanish.

Content structure

In Foswiki, data is organized in webs , topics and attachments:

  • A topic is the basic unit, such as a section or document, but not necessarily a (web) page. Topics can be hierarchically superordinate and subordinate to each other.
  • A web is a superordinate task group for any number of topics.

Extensions

Foswiki has a plugin interface that supports more than 300 extensions. Thanks to the interface and the Foswiki markup language, developers can create additional modules and expand the functionality of Foswiki. In addition, the support of around 200 TWiki plugins is ensured via a compatibility plugin. The Foswiki plugins enable, for example, links to databases, the creation of diagrams , tags, tables, spreadsheets , image galleries, presentations and much more.

Demarcation

The main difference to other wiki systems such as the MediaWiki used by Wikipedia itself is the simple programming of applications: Foswiki pages can generate and process variables and forms from the source text of the pages. This enables the development of form-based applications without requiring in-depth programming knowledge from the user. The software also has a finely adjustable access control.

Use as an enterprise wiki

Application in companies

First and foremost, the structured and system-oriented Foswiki is an enterprise wiki system for use in company intranets. With Foswiki, for example, activities of working groups are coordinated and project statuses, internal processes and other information of relatively permanent relevance are mapped, documented and expanded.

distribution

According to the community (as of March 2007), Foswiki / TWiki is used in 40,000 companies worldwide. In addition, 20,000 public websites are to be based on Foswiki / TWiki. The community puts the total number of users at more than two million people. In addition to numerous small and medium-sized companies, very well-known companies also use Foswiki / TWiki on the intranet, including Nokia , Motorola , Yahoo , DHL , Robert Bosch GmbH , SAP , Disney , CERN and others.

history

The TWiki fork

On October 27, 2008, a large part of the TWiki community, including the core developer team, split off from the TWiki project. The background to the fork were tensions between the community and the TWiki founder Peter Thoeny or his company TWIKI.NET. The main point of contention is the increasingly commercially oriented corporate policy of TWIKI.NET, with which the community did not identify. The dispute escalated when Thoeny tried to enforce new rules of procedure by temporarily blocking developer accounts. The community viewed this as a hostile takeover of the project.

Foswiki was initially run under the working title NextWiki, but was renamed Foswiki in November 2008.
