Foveran Parish Church

The Foveran Parish Church is a parish of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish village of Foveran in the Council area Aberdeenshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B. The associated cemetery is classified separately as a Category C monument. A grave slab inside the church is classified as a monument of the highest monument category A.

history

There was previously a medieval church on the site, of which there are no visible remains today. Today's Foveran Parish Church was built in 1794. In 1852 repair work was carried out on the building. The pews were renewed in 1871 and the gallery six years later. The apsidial organ room on the south side was added in 1901.

description

The Foveran Parish Church is located directly on the A975 in the hamlet of Foveran. The small, elongated building is designed with four arched windows on the south facade and arched portals on the gable sides. Its masonry is made of granite . The U-shaped gallery inside rests on cast iron pillars, which are designed as an arcade with throws in the upper area .

A quarry stone wall encloses the surrounding cemetery. Few historical tombstones have survived. The medieval Turing Slab is named after the Turing family who provided the local lairds . It is 2.22 meters long, 1.03 meters wide and 14 centimeters thick. The well-preserved, but centrally broken plate shows two armored people.
