Jean Frédérique (Frédéric) François Louis Allamand (* 1736 in Payerne , † 1803 in Leiden ) was a Swiss doctor and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ F.Allam. ".

Live and act

Frédéric-Louis Allamand is the son of François-Benjamin Allamand and his wife Marie Madeleine de Treytorrens. In 1749 he moved to his uncle Jean-Nicolas-Sébastien Allamand (1716–1787), who was professor of philosophy in Leiden . In the same year he began to study literature. However, his interests changed and he received his doctorate in medicine in 1753.

From 1760 he was a ship's doctor in the Dutch navy and thus got a. a. to Suriname , Guyana and the Dutch West Indies . In 1770 he published an article on the history of West Indian syphilis in Nova Acta Leopoldina and described new plant genera that he had discovered in the Netherlands Antilles. At the end of the same year he sent a manuscript entitled Genera Plantarum Americanarum to Carl von Linné . Linnaeus was so enthusiastic about the material sent that he offered Allamand to name one of the new plant genera after him.

Later Allamand was a doctor at the court of Catherine II in Saint Petersburg and married Adriana van Guericke there around 1776. In 1793 he returned to Leiden.
