The early torch lily ( Kniphofia praecox ) is a species of the genus of torch lilies ( Kniphofia ) in the subfamily of the Affodill family (Asphodelaceae).

The early torch lily is a perennial , herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 100 to 200 centimeters. It forms a rhizome . The leaves are coarse, usually finely serrated and 20 to 40 millimeters wide. The bracts are narrowly lanceolate and long, pointed. The inflorescence measures 12 to 30 × 6 to 7 centimeters and is dense. The perigone is 24 to 34 millimeters long and the stamens tower over it by 4 to 15 millimeters.
The flowering period probably extends from June to August.
Occurrence
The early torch lily occurs in South Africa in the Cape Province on the banks of streams and on grasslands in depressions at altitudes of 0 to 1800 meters.

The early torch lily is rarely used as an ornamental plant. The species was cultivated before 1800.
