Fra Mauro is an impact crater on Earth's moon with a diameter of 95 km. It is located in the center of the Fra Mauro formation , northeast of the Mare Cognitum and southeast of the Mare Insularum . The Fra-Mauro crater shares the southern edge with the younger lunar craters Bonpland and Parry , which means that the southern crater wall is arched into the Fra-Mauro crater.
The remaining crater rim was severely fissured by later meteorite impacts, with larger openings to the north and east. The highest elevation of the crater wall is 700 m. Since the crater is heavily fused, it is also known as the “Fra-Mauro-Hochland”.
The crater floor is covered by basaltic lava . The surface of the soil is criss-crossed by fissures running north-south. The crater does not have a central hill .

Apollo missions
Fra Mauro was originally intended as a landing site for the failed Apollo 13 mission. The landing area in the northern part of Fra Mauro was then assigned to Apollo 14 . During the mission, breccia were collected there, which were deposited on parts of the Fra Mauro crater by the Imbrium impact. These ceilings, some of which are made up of coarse rubble, are also known as the “Fra Mauro formation”.
origin of the name
The Fra Mauro crater was named after the Venetian monk and cartographer Fra Mauro .
