Río Eume

The Fragas do Eume ( Galician ) and Fragas del Eume ( Spanish ) are a nature reserve in Galicia. Your forest is a typical example of the warmth-loving Atlantic forest of Europe.

geography

Río Eume

The nature reserve covers an area of 91.25 km² along the river Río Eume , east of the city of Pontedeume in the Galician province of A Coruña . It is made up of parts of the municipalities of Cabañas , Capela , Monfero , Pontedeume and Pontes de García Rodríguez .

A total of around 500 people reside in the area.

history

In May 1996 the Galician Provincial Government issued a decree to reorganize the natural sanctuaries in the Río Eume area. On July 30, 1997, the Fragas do Eume were officially founded. Another decree in August 1997 determined the Fragas in the narrower sense. They consist of a 32.5 km² nature park; the rest are protected forest, bush and pasture areas as well as zones where fishing is permitted.

On March 31, 2012, a forest fire broke out in the area of the municipality of A Capela. According to research, it was deliberately laid. It spread in the upper valley of the Eume, favored by strong winds and the easy flammability of the numerous eucalyptus and pines. A total of 750 hectares burned down, 350 of them in the Fragas, of which 100 hectares were in an area particularly worthy of protection. On April 3, the fire was finally extinguished.

flora

The Fragas do Eume offer excellent examples of typical Galician vegetation. They are home to a rich biodiversity. Elsewhere, it was destroyed because fertile soils such as in the Fragas are normally used for agriculture.

Many English oaks can be seen in the woods . Also chestnuts are encountered everywhere. The faster growing birch trees dominate the alluvial forest and peripheral areas, where they have increased at the expense of chestnuts. With programs to preserve the chestnuts one tries to push back the birch trees again.

Fern is the predominant ground cover in the forest. The Fragas are home to around 20 species of fern. The most common are rib fern and chaff-scaly worm fern .

fauna

The dark and humid forest is an ideal habitat for amphibians . 13 of the 15 species found in Galicia find a habitat there. The deciduous forests provide habitat for the fire salamander , especially its subspecies Portuguese fire salamander (Salamandra salamendra galliaca). Common toads are also common . Iberian water frogs live in the streams.

You can also meet otters there . Predators outside of the water include stone marten , gorse , red fox and badger . Even wolves are native to remote and higher parts of the park.

Large herbivorous mammals that are more commonly seen are roe deer and red deer .

Cultural monuments

In the park there are two former monasteries, the Mosteiro de San Xoán de Caaveiro , founded in the 10th century, and the Monasterio de Santa María de Monfero , built in the 12th century.

Human activities

Outside the strictly protected core zone, certain forms of use are permitted. For example, charcoal is made in the traditional way in kilns .

Architectural monuments

Medieval ruins of monasteries and stone crucifix sculptures testify to the presence of man in the past.

The Mosteiro de Caaveiro was built in 934. It provided a safe haven for the numerous hermits in the area. In 1975 it was protected as the Monumento histórico-artístico .

The origins of the Mosteiro de Monfero go back to the 10th century. At that time a monastery was founded below a chapel dedicated to Saint Mark. With the exception of the church, the monastery is in a ruinous state. However, the park administration is planning a restoration.
