François Campion (* 1686 in Rouen , † October 21, 1747 in Paris ) was a French theorbist , guitarist , composer and music theorist of the Baroque .

life and work

Campion worked from 1703 to 1719 as the theorbist of the orchestra of the Académie Royale de Musique at the Grand Opera in Paris. For the baroque guitar he composed Pièces pour la Guitarre (“Pieces for the guitar”).

As a music theorist, Campion published the following works:

  • New découvertes sur la guitare. Paris 1705 (contains the solo pieces for the guitar)
  • Traité d'accompagnement et de composition selon la règle des octaves. Amsterdam 1716.
  • Addition au traité d'accompagnement […]. Paris 1739.

The Traité d'accompagnement is one of the first representations of the a-vista harmonization of unquantified basses developed in Italy according to the Regola dell'Ottava . However, Jean-Jacques Rousseau drew attention to the fact that the music theorist and theorbist Etienne Denis Delair published the rule of octaves even before Campion.
