François Dusart , also Frans Dieussart (* around 1600 in Armentières , † 1661 in London ) was a Flemish - Walloon sculptor who worked for royal courts in England , the United Netherlands and Northern Europe and made portrait busts in the Italian Baroque style.

life and work

By the time he came to Rome in his early twenties, Dusart was probably already an active sculptor. In 1622 he enrolled in the pilgrims' hospice in the Church of San Giuliano dei Fiamminghi , presiding over it around 1630. In 1636 he was invited to England by the Earl of Arundel and made a name for himself there by constructing a magnificent monstrance over 12 meters high for Queen Henrietta Maria's chapel in Somerset House .

His bust of Charles I of England , probably commissioned by the Earl of Arundel, is in Arundel Castle . Another portrait bust of Charles I at Windsor Castle (possibly created around 1737–44 by Thomas Adye or Francis Bird) is believed to be a copy of a lost bust from Dusart's workshop.

He is mentioned in a poem by Cornelis de Bie in his book Het Gulden Cabinet as a court sculptor for the Stuarts in England. A brief biographical sketch for Dieussart was published in the early art history reference work Die Teutsche Academie by Joachim von Sandrart . According to the Netherlands Institute for Art History , he learned his craft in Rome from François Duquesnoy .
