François Duval (composer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

François Duval (* 1672 or 1673 in Paris ; † January 27, 1728 in Versailles ) was a French violinist and composer of the Baroque era .

Live and act

François Duval was the son of a Parisian dance master of the same name, who was a dancer in Lully's opera performances. The father appeared in 1695 in the registers of poll tax among the taxpayers 1st class, which suggests solid family relationships.

The earliest known composition by François Duval is an Air nouveau published in 1699 by the Mercure Galant . From 1704 at the latest, when he first received a general privilege to publish his works, Duval was in the service of the Duke of Orléans , to whom he dedicated his violin sonatas op. 1. It was the first French publication of violin sonatas in the Italian style, a year before Jean-Féry Rebels Pieces pour le violon was published . Duval used the violin-specific playing techniques that had become known in France through Arcangelo Corelli's sonata collection op. 5 (1700). Another of Duval's employers was the Duke of Noailles, to whom he dedicated his Trio Sonatas op.

De Noailles had Duval perform before King Louis XIV, to whom Duval dedicated his sonata collection op. 3. From then on, Duval took part in the performances of François Couperin's Concerts royaux , together with Couperin (harpsichord), Hilaire Verloge (viol), André Danican Philidor (oboe) and the bassoonist Pierre Dubois.

As the successor to the deceased Pierre Joubert, Duval became a member of the Vingt-quatre Violons du Roy in 1714 . In 1715 he received another, this time local, printing privilege for a period of 12 years. Johann Adam Birkenstock was one of his outstanding students .

Works

Duval's first sonatas are composed in the style of the Italian sonatas and prove the knowledge of the works of Arcangelo Corelli . The frequent use of double stops and playing in high registers prove the excellent knowledge of his instrument. With his works he paved the way for composers of the younger generation like Jean-Marie Leclair . His sonatas are composed partly as church sonatas , partly in suite form .
