François Lalonde

François Lalonde (born September 17, 1955 ) is a Canadian mathematician who studies symplectic geometry and symplectic topology.

Life

Lalonde received his bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Montreal in 1976 and his master's degree in theoretical computer science from Montreal in 1979. In 1985 he received his PhD in mathematics from the University of Paris-Süd in Orsay and was then NSERC Research Fellow. From 1991 to 2001 he was a professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal and since 2001 he has been a professor at the University of Montreal on a Canada Research Chair in symplectic topology.

Among other things, he was visiting professor at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Lyon, at Stanford University and visiting scholar at IHES (1983 to 1985), at Harvard University (1989–1990), at the University of Strasbourg, the École polytechnique , the University of Tel Aviv and the University of Aix-Marseille.

With Octav Cornea he developed an approach to Floer's theory via cluster homology. He also worked with Dusa McDuff .

In 2001 he became a Fellow of the Fields Institute . From 2000 to 2001 he was a Killam Fellow. From 2004 to 2008 and 2011 to 2013 he was director of the Center de Recherches Mathématiques (CRM) in Montreal.

In 2006 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid ( Lagrangian submanifolds: from the local model to the cluster complex ).
