François Paul Louis Pollen (born January 8, 1842 in Rotterdam , † May 7, 1886 in The Hague ) was a naturalist and businessman. Despite his French first name, he was Dutch. He made a significant contribution to the study of the Malagasy fauna.

Live and act

Pollen was one of five children of MP Pollen (1806–1857), the owner of the MPPollen & Zoon distillery in Rotterdam . In 1862 he came to Leiden to study medicine. Hermann Schlegel encouraged him to study zoology. From November 1863 to July 1866 he traveled with Douwe Casparus van Dam (1827–1898) to Madagascar, where they collected insects, fish, birds and mammals for the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden. Thanks to its wealth, Pollen paid for this expedition out of pocket. He later funded the field work of other researchers in Madagascar without being involved on site. He was also active as a collector of animals and plants on the Comoros and on the Mascarene island of Réunion . In 1875, Pollen received an honorary doctorate from the Georg-August University of Göttingen . Together with Hermann Schlegel, pollen described the Madagascar palm bat ( Eidolon dupreanum ) in 1866 . That same year he wrote the first scientific description of the Newton tracked catcher ( Coracina newtoni ) and 1868 he described along with Schlegel Vangawürger genus of Newtonia .

Dedication names

The Comoros pigeon ( Columba pollenii ), the pollen vanga ( Xenopirostris polleni ), the chameleon species Furcifer polleni and the skinkart Madascincus polleni are named after pollen .
