Françoise Anne Gabrielle Nyssen (born June 9, 1951 in Etterbeek ) is the Belgian - French publisher of Actes Sud . From May 15, 2017 to October 2018, she was French Minister of Culture under Prime Minister Édouard Philippe .

Life

Françoise Nyssen is the daughter of the Belgian-French writer and publisher Hubert Nyssen and Christine Le Bœuf. She studied chemistry at the Université libre de Bruxelles and from 1975 to 1978 urban planning at the Institut Saint-Luc . She worked as an employee in the Belgian Ministry of the Environment. Her father brought her to Arles in 1980, at the Actes Sud publishing house he founded , which she has been running since 1987, later together with her second husband Jean-Paul Capitan and another partner.

Nyssen was publicly involved in French politics and in 2007 supported the presidential candidacy of Ségolène Royal , the candidate of the Parti socialiste . In the 2017 presidential election , she supported the eventual winner, Emmanuel Macron . From May 2017, she was Minister of Culture in the Philippe I cabinet of the transitional government and in the Philippe II cabinet formed after the parliamentary elections . One of their goals was to enable people outside the metropolis of Paris to have greater access to culture. However, critics described their plan to temporarily exhibit important works of art such as the Mona Lisa in the provinces as a " paternalistic " gesture. At the end of August 2018, she was under public pressure over allegations of unauthorized construction work on her publishing house. Because of alleged conflicts of interest, she lost some responsibilities as Minister of Culture. As part of a major cabinet reshuffle, the Ministry of Culture had to hand it over to Franck Riester on October 16, 2018 .

Nyssen has five children, one son committed suicide. In 2014, she founded a school near Arles for children with learning difficulties; the lessons are based on the Waldorf school model .

Nyssen was appointed Commandeur des Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2008 , Officer of the Legion of Honor in 2010 and Commander des Ordre national du Mérite in 2017 .
