Francesco Adorno

Francesco Adorno (born April 9, 1921 in Syracuse , Sicily , † September 19, 2010 in Florence ) was an Italian university professor and historian of philosophy .

Life

After attending school, he studied philosophy at the University of Florence and graduated with a doctorate in 1944 . He then took up an academic career and became professor for the history of philosophy , philosophy of antiquity and philosophy of the Middle Ages at the universities of Bari , Bologna and Florence.

In addition, he was President of the Tuscan Academy of Sciences and Literature ( Accademia Toscana di Scienze e Lettere "La Colombaria" ) and of the Museum and Institute for Early History in Florence ( Museo e istituto fiorentino di preistoria ) until his resignation for health reasons in July 2009 . He was also the editor of the Corpus dei papiri filosofici greci e latini (CPF).

As a university lecturer, he dealt in particular with the thinking of pre-Socratics , Socrates , Plato , Sophistics , Stoa , Epicurus and Seneca . Strongly influenced by his own experiences during the 1930s and 1940s, he conceived his philosophy as a form of historical-critical reflection.
