Francesco Cornaro (also Francesco Corner ; * 1547 in Venice , † April 23, 1598 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He came from the Venetian patrician dynasty of the Cornaro and was the son of Marc'Antonio Cornaro and his wife Cecilia Contarini. His brother was Giovanni I. Cornaro , Doge of Venice . He was a nephew of Cardinals Federico Cornaro (seniore) and Luigi Cornaro , and he was also the uncle of Cardinal Federico Cornaro (junior) .

After studying law at the University of Padua , which he graduated in 1571, he became Commander Abbot of Santa Bona in Vidor in the province of Treviso . His uncle Giorgio Cornaro resigned as Bishop of Treviso so that Francesco Cornaro could take over the bishopric. On November 29, 1577 he was elected Bishop of Treviso. Appointed cleric of the Apostolic Chamber in 1586 , he renounced the diocese of Treviso in 1595 and became governor of Civitavecchia on January 4, 1596 .

Pope Clement VIII elevated him to the cardinal priest position in the consistory of June 5, 1596 and awarded him San Martino ai Monti as titular church on June 21 of the same year .

He was buried in the Roman church of San Silvestro al Quirinale .
