Federico Cornaro , to distinguish it from Federico Baldissera Bartolomeo Cornaro also Federico Cornaro Senior (born June 9, 1531 in Venice , † October 4, 1590 in Rome ), was an Italian Roman Catholic bishop and cardinal .

Life

Federico Cornaro came from the powerful Venetian patrician family Cornaro ( venez. Cornèr ). He was bishop of Trogir 1560–1561 and of Bergamo 1561–1577. When he was appointed bishop of Padua in 1577, he also became papal nuncio for the Republic of Venice .

Federico Cornaro stood in the tradition of the Renaissance church princes and Cornaro nepotism , but also took up reform impulses from the Council of Trent . In Padua he founded the seminary and led three diocesan synods . He took part in four provincial synods of Charles Borromeo in Milan .

In December 1585 Sixtus V elevated him to cardinalate , whereupon he was installed as cardinal priest of Santo Stefano al Monte Celio in 1586 . Cardinal Corner took part in the conclave in September 1590 , which elected Urban VII on September 15 († September 27, 1590); three weeks later, four days before the new conclave began , he died in Rome.

Gregory XIV had an elaborate tomb erected for him in the Roman church of San Silvestro al Quirinale .
