Francesco Netti (born December 22, 1832 in Santeramo in Colle ; † August 28, 1894 ibid) was an Italian painter.

He was born to Nicola, a wealthy landowner, and Giuseppa Vitale.

After his law studies, which he attended at the will of the family, he studied from 1855 at the Reale Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli, where he stayed for only one year. He then studied privately with Giuseppe Bonolis , then with Michele De Napoli and Tommaso De Vivo .

Between 1856 and 1859 he stayed in Rome with his friend Pasquale De Criscito .

After his return to Naples in 1860 he visited Domenico Morelli's studio . Between 1862 and 1864, Netti attended the school of nude painting by Filippo Palizzi .

He moved to Paris in 1866 (where his friend Giuseppe Palizzi had lived since 1844), stayed there until 1871 and from August 1869 to January 1870 he stayed in Grez-sur-Loing , a small village on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest.

In 1870, when the Franco-Prussian War broke out , he returned to Paris, unlike other Italian artists. He helped with the Italian Red Cross and almost completely stopped painting.

After his return to Naples in 1872, he took up the theme of the carnival again, which had already been dealt with in 1864. He also worked as an art critic and journalist.

In 1874 he went on a study trip to Padua , Ferrara and Venice .

In 1876 he was commissioned to paint an altarpiece for Altamura Cathedral , which was delivered the following year.

Inspired by the famous Fadda Trial of 1879, he created his most famous work - The Courtroom Audience Gallery.

In 1884 he moved to the Orient, invited to a cruise by Giuseppe Caravita, Prince of Sirignano, a leading figure in the Neapolitan area. Turkey - where he stayed for two months - inspired a series of drawings and watercolors. He then returned to Italy by land and visited Bucharest, Budapest and Vienna. When he arrived in Naples, he set up his studio in the Capomazza Palace in the Arco Mirelli. The furniture was bought in Turkey.

In 1891 Netti was called to Naples by the Prince of Sirignano, who had commissioned him to decorate the walls of the dining room of his new palace on the Riviera di Chiaia. Netti made five cartons for tapestries for the Aubusson (Creuse) manufactory.
