Francesco Profumo (born May 3, 1953 in Savona , Liguria ) is an Italian electrical engineer , university professor and minister . In the Monti government , he headed the Ministry of Education from November 2011 to April 2013 .

Career

After studying electrical engineering at the Technical University of Turin (Politecnico di Torino) , Profumo worked from 1978 to 1984 in the research and development department of the Ansaldo Group in Genoa . In 1984 he returned to Turin as a lecturer at his alma mater , and later became a professor at the University of Bologna . In September 2003 Profumo took over the management of the engineering faculty of the TU Turin, in October 2005 he became its rector . In August 2011 Profumo became President of the National Research Council Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Rome . He was visiting professor at the universities of Wisconsin-Madison , Nagasaki , Prague (TU) and Córdoba (Argentina) . Profumo is a member of several engineering committees. Around 250 scientific articles by Profumo were published in specialist journals . He has received numerous awards, including several honorary doctorates and honorary professorships . He has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 2010 . Profumo was on the board of several Italian companies . As education minister he caused a sensation when he claimed: " Religious education no longer makes sense in its current form".
