Francesco Giacomo Tricomi (born May 5, 1897 in Naples , † November 21, 1978 in Turin ) was an Italian mathematician who dealt with analysis , especially differential equations .

Live and act

Francesco Tricomi studied in Bologna and Naples , where he received his diploma in 1918. Then he was assistant to Francesco Severi, first in Padua and then in Rome . In 1925 he was in Florence and finally at the University of Turin , where he held the chair of analysis until his retirement in 1967. 1943-1945 and 1948 to 1951 he was at Caltech at the Bateman Manuscript Project under the direction of Arthur Erdélyi involved.

Tricomi worked in many areas of analysis. He became known in 1923 through the investigation of the partial differential equation named after him (of the "mixed type")

.

For example, it was used in the theory of supersonic flows . A type of special function is also named after him. He was also interested in mathematics history.

Tricomi was a member of the Accademia dei Lincei , which awarded him an Antonio Feltrinelli Prize in 1961 , and the Turin Academy of Sciences . Since 1956 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . He was editor of the journal Aequationes Mathematicae .

The asteroid (31189) Tricomi was named after him on March 28, 2002.
