Francis Gurry (born May 17, 1951 ) is an Australian lawyer and the fourth and current Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations . He is also the Secretary General of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV).

Career

Gurry graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1974 . In 1975 he became a Barrister and Solicitor in the Supreme Court of Victoria admitted. He worked in Melbourne as a trainee lawyer and solicitor in the law firm Arthur Robinson & Co. In 1976 he received his master's degree from the University of Melbourne. From 1976 to 1979 Gurry was enrolled as a research student at the law faculty of the UK University of Cambridge , where he received his PhD in 1980 with a thesis on breach of trust.

In the following years, Gurry worked as a lecturer at the University of Melbourne, and for a year as a solicitor at the law firm Freehills in Melbourne. At times he was visiting professor at the University of Dijon .

In 1985 Francis Gurry joined the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) as a consultant and project manager in the regional office for Asia and the Pacific . In the following years he had various organizational tasks. From 1999 to 2003 he was assistant to the general manager and from 2003 deputy general manager. Areas of responsibility included the Treaty on International Cooperation in the Field of Patents (PCT), patent law and the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center, which he helped to establish, as well as traditional knowledge , traditional cultural achievements and genetic resources.

Francis Gurry was elected Director General of WIPO on May 13, 2008. On September 22nd, 2008 it was confirmed by the WIPO General Assembly. On May 8, 2014, Gurry was elected for an additional 6-year term.

Gurry is a member of the International Gender Champions (IGC) network, which advocates gender equality in international organizations.
