Francisco Castro Rodrigues (born October 21, 1920 in Lisbon; † May 2, 2015 ibid) was a Portuguese architect who was particularly active in the Angolan city of Lobito for over three decades.

Life

Francisco Castro Rodrigues was born on October 21st in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. After completing school, Rodrigues studied engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico from 1940 to 1941 , before moving to the Escola de Belas Artes to study architecture. He completed his studies in 1951.

Rodrigues worked in the office of Veloso Reis Camelo from 1939 to 1943 . From 1946 to 1953 he worked with the architects João Simões and José Humberto Lobo from Portugal on projects in the Portuguese colonies , in particular Angola , Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe .

He took on various teaching positions and offices, for example as head of the important cultural association Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes from 1945 to 1953. With Celestino Castro , he worked for the first time a complete translation of the Charter of Athens (CIAM) , which it published in Arquitectura magazine in January published by December 1948.

He was in opposition to the repressive Estado Novo regime under Salazar and was a member of the illegal Communist Party of Portugal , from which he withdrew from 1949. After the secret police PIDE had temporarily arrested him from March 26th to June 6th, 1947, and in 1953 made it impossible for him to accept a promised position in the architecture office of the Lisbon city administration, he went to Angola, where he became head of the architecture department of the Câmara Municipal Lobito became. Originally employed on a four-year contract, he stayed here until 1987, in various positions, including head of the urban planning department and the department for culture, public relations and tourism. He also helped set up the state architecture courses in the Republic of Angola, both as a university lecturer and in an advisory capacity for the Ministry of Education.

In 1988 he returned to Portugal, where, after the Portuguese Carnation Revolution and due to the escalation of the civil war in Angola , he had already lived temporarily between November 1975 and April 1976, and was involved in projects in Moura and Beja . In 1993 he was invited by the city of Lobito to the city festivals and honored there. He lived until the end in the small town of Azenhas do Mar on the Portuguese Atlantic coast , in the municipality of Colares . Rodrigues died on May 2, 2015 in the Hospital de Santa Maria in Lisbon .
