Francisco José Arnáiz Zarandona
Francisco José Arnáiz Zarandona SJ (born March 9, 1925 in Bilbao , Spain , † February 14, 2014 in Santo Domingo , Dominican Republic ) was auxiliary bishop in Santo Domingo . He was considered one of the most important personalities of the Dominican Catholic Church.
Life
Francisco José Arnáiz Zarandona joined the congregation of the Jesuits , made perpetual profession on May 30, 1941 and was ordained a priest on July 15, 1955 . He studied classical humanities in Havana, Cuba, and philosophy at the Spanish Pontifical University of Comillas . At the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome he was awarded a Dr. theol. PhD. He completed further studies in psychology, psychiatry and Ignatian spirituality.
In 1961 he came to the Dominican Republic from Cuba after the Fidel Castro revolution . He witnessed the assassination attempt on dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina and the reconstruction of the Catholic Church. Francisco José Arnáiz Zarandona was Professor at the San Ildefonso Seminary in Aibonito, Puerto Rico, (1949–1952), Rector of the Novitiate of St. Stanislaus Kostka and Director of the Ignatius Seminary in Havana (1959–1961). He was the founder and director of the CIAS Information and Social Action Center in Santo Domingo. He founded the Center for Education and Agricultural Action (Cefasa) and was its director from 1962 to 1964. From 1964 to 1975 he was director of the Pontifical Seminary of Santo Tomás de Aquino, later the Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino in Santo Domingo.
Francisco José Arnáiz Zarandona was the companion of Archbishop of Santo Domingo, Octavio Antonio Beras Rojas , at the Second Vatican Council . From 1975 to 2002 he was secretary of the Bishops' Conference of the Dominican Republic.
Pope John Paul II named him auxiliary bishop in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic and titular bishop of Leges on August 17, 1988 . . John Paul II personally donated to him on January 6, 1989 at St. Peter's Basilica , the episcopal ordination ; Co-consecrators were Edward Idris Cassidy , substitute for the State Secretariat , and José Tomás Sánchez , Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples . He was Episcopal Vicar for the Catholic University of Santo Domingo (1988), President of the Department for the Consecrated Life of CELAM and President of the ADAA (Dominican Association of Self-Evaluation and Accreditation) of private universities (1990-1995).
On July 31, 2002, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. He died in February 2014 after health problems at the age of 88.
His publications include 20 books and more than 1,650 articles written as a columnist for Listín Diario magazine.
Francisco José Arnáiz Zarandona was granted citizenship of the Dominican Republic.
