Francisco Obieta (born December 11, 1957 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine double bass player and composer .

Life

Francisco Obieta was born in Buenos Aires in 1957 to an Italian mother and a Basque father . As a child he got to know life on the big Argentine haciendas, so he first studied agricultural engineering. Later he decided to become a musician and began studying double bass, direction and composition in Buenos Aires. In 1984 he received a grant from the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation and continued his studies in Switzerland .

From 1988 to 2009 he was solo bassist / stelv. Solo bassist with the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra , since 1991 he has been professor for double bass, chamber music and composition at the Vorarlberg State Conservatory in Feldkirch .

Musical work

In addition to his work as a teacher and soloist, Francisco Obieta leads the groups "Sur", "Octango", "Urban Tango Experience" and Barrio de Tango , with which he only plays his own arrangements. He also appears with "Maldito Tango", a quintet with Swiss musicians. He also appears as a soloist (double bass and / or violoncello) with electronic effects under the name Klangschaften . Since 2009 he has also been the conductor of the St. Gallen University Orchestra, with which remarkable concerts have been heard in Switzerland and many other European countries.
