history

Tonhalle St. Gallen

While St. Gallen already knew subscription concerts in the 1850s. For example, when Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner conducted a concert together for the first time, a professional symphonic orchestra was only founded in 1877, which was supported by the St. Gallen Concert Association and served as a theater and concert orchestra. It was Othmar Schoeck , the Swiss composer and conductor who directed the orchestra from 1917 to 1944. He was followed by u. a. Carl Schuricht , Paul Kletzki , André Cluytens , Samuel Friedman and John Neschling . In 2000, the symphony orchestra and the then joined the Municipal Theater of St. Gallen newly St. Gallen concert and theater together. In this way, a VAT optimization could be achieved, since the symphony orchestra provides services for the theater in operas, operettas and musicals.

management

In the management of the Konzert und Theater St. Gallen there is the function of concert director for the interests of the orchestra, which Florian Scheiber has performed since 2004. He is responsible for programming, engagements and finances and, together with two delegates from the orchestra and the chief conductor, for the selection of works. After Jiři Kout left the orchestra in 2008 after 12 years as chief conductor, David Stern took over the orchestra. Due to constantly growing international obligations, he only extended his three-year contract, which ended in 2011, for one more year until the end of the 2011/12 season. In May 2012 the first concert took place under the new chief conductor Otto Tausk . His contract in St. Gallen ended in summer 2018, and his successor is Modestas Pitrenas .
