Francisco Orrego Vicuña

Francisco Orrego Vicuña (born June 12, 1942 in Santiago de Chile ; † October 2, 2018 ) was a Chilean lawyer and since 1969 professor of international law at the Universidad de Chile .

Orrego received his school education in Madrid , at the French school in Cairo and Santiago. After studying law at the Universidad de Chile, which Orrego graduated in 1965, he initially worked as a legal advisor to the Organization of American States . In 1969 he was appointed professor of international law at the Universidad de Chile. As part of his teaching activities, he was director of the Institute for International Law from 1974 to 1983 and 2001/2002 and was visiting professor at Stanford University and in Paris , among others . Orrego was Chilean Ambassador to Great Britain from 1983 to 1985 . During his stay, he obtained a Master of Laws from the London School of Economics in 1985 .

Orrego was appointed ad hoc judge by the government of Chile in the dispute between Chile and the European Union before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea over fishing rights in the South Pacific , which has been going on since 2000 . In addition, he was nominated by his home country as ad hoc judge in a case before the International Court of Justice in The Hague . From 2012 he worked as a judge at the Administrative Court of the International Monetary Fund .

He was a member of the American Society for International Law , the Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Institution of Great Britain .
