Francisco Salvador-Daniel

Francisco Salvador-Daniel (born February 17, 1831 in Bourges , † May 24, 1871 in Paris ) was a French composer and ethnomusicologist of Spanish origin.

Life

His father Salvador Daniel was a musician with Jewish roots who had fled to France. After training at the Paris Conservatory , he taught the violin in Algiers in 1853 . He translated North African songs into French and adapted the music for European instruments. On his return to Paris in 1865 he became a music critic in Henri Rochefort's satirical magazine La Lanterne , which appeared from May 1868.

During the Paris Commune , after Daniel Auber's death (May 12, 1871), he was appointed director of the Conservatory and was finally executed by government troops during the “ bloody week of May ” ( May 21-28 , 1871) Taken from his apartment in the rue Jacob by an officer on May 8, led to the corner with the rue Bonaparte, and shot there as a member of the commune.
