Francisco de Paula Milán (* 1821 - May 8, 1883 in Xalapa , Veracruz ) was an officer in the Mexican army from the group of liberals who fought for the cause of Benito Juarez .

Life

Milán graduated from the University of Puebla with a law degree . In 1847 he joined the National Guard and took part in the defense of the port of Veracruz and other actions against the American invaders , for which he was imprisoned twice.

He fought in the Mexican Reform War (1857–1861) against the conservatives and as part of the French intervention in Mexico .

In 1862 he took part in the great Mexican victory at the Battle of May 5th (Puebla Fortress). According to a communication dated February 7, 1863, he then became the military commander of Veracruz. With his command of a small army he surprised and destroyed a small group of the Foreign Legion on April 30, 1863 in the battle of Camerone . Milán commanded: 1200 soldiers from the army battalions and 600 men from the cavalry auxiliaries. There were also three infantry battalions of 400 men each, that of Córdoba under the command of Colonel Francisco Talavera, that of Xalapa under the command of Coronel Ismael Terán and that of Veracruz under the command of Coronel Rafael Estrada.

According to the official biography, Milán became governor of the state of Veracruz in 1866 .

After the French troops withdrew from Mexico in 1867, Milán assisted the Habsburg Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria in the siege and occupation of the port of Veracruz.

After the victory of the republic, Milán turned to trade. He composed the operetta La Amiga de las Niñas .
