Frank-Jürgen Methner

Frank-Jürgen Methner (born October 28, 1953 in Brandenburg / Havel ) is a German brewing scientist . Until his retirement in 2019, he headed the brewing department at the Technical University of Berlin and deals with research, teaching and advice on everything to do with beer .

Life

Methner attended the elementary school in Waldwimmersbach from 1960 to 1964 and the Nicolaus-Kistner-Gymnasium in Mosbach until 1973 . After graduating from high school, he was with the armed forces until he started his studies . From 1975 to 1981 he studied food technology, specializing in brewery technology, at the Technical University of Berlin , graduating with a degree in engineering. He then worked for a short time as the plant controller of the Schlösser brewery in Düsseldorf, before moving from 1982 to 1986 as a research assistant at the research institute for technology in brewing and malting at the experimental and training institute for brewing in Berlin. Methner received his dissertation from Karl Wackerbauer in 1987 with a study "About the aroma formation in Berlin wheat beer with special consideration of acids and esters." For 17 years he then worked in research and quality assurance at the Bitburger brewery .

In 2004 he was appointed to the chair for brewery technology at the TU Berlin as the successor to Karl Wackerbauer. Among other things, he researched new brewing processes for non-alcoholic beer . On March 28, 2019, he and Lothar W. Kroh were retired at a symposium entitled “Malz meets Maillard”.

Methner is chairman of the Central European Brewery Analysis Commission MEBAK . He lives in Bitburg .
