Frank Bürmann (* 1964 in Hildesheim ) is a German painter and sculptor .

life and work

Frank Bürmann began a career as a policeman with the Lower Saxony police force.

On his travels through Europe, Bürmann met the Greek painter Giannis Tsarouchis in 1985 , for whom he worked for a few months. In Tsarouchi's studio he met artists such as David Hockney and Dionysis Fotopoulos .

In 1989 Bürmann was diagnosed with a bone tumor , followed by numerous operations and hospital stays. For the next 4 years, Bürmann sat in a wheelchair and as a result worked exclusively in his Hildesheim studio. The wheelchair inspired a series of chair sculptures, exhibited in Hildesheim in 1992. Together with James Rizzi and Otmar Alt, Bürmann exhibited his cycle of pictures “Kleiner Könich” in 1993 in Baden-Baden.

In 1994 she was accepted into the Association of Visual Artists (BBK).

A joint exhibition with Robert Combas in the Bouscayrol gallery in Biarritz and Bordeaux was followed by Bürmann's first major solo exhibition in 1995 in the gallery l'oil in the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels .

In 1998 Bürmann's drawing Weltraumtraumraum (Sumi ink on paper) was sent into space for three weeks as part of the Mir Soyuz TM 28 mission . The cosmonauts Sergei Wassiljewitsch Avdejew , Gennadi Padalka and Juri Michailowitsch Baturin stamped and signed the drawing on the Mir (space station) , which was then sent back to earth.

In 2000, Bürmann opened a second studio in Hamburg, until he moved entirely to the Hanseatic city in 2001. During this time he was represented by the Hohmann Gallery in Hamburg and The Hart Gallery in Chicago.

In 2006, Bürmann left the canvas completely with the project The Art of Hamburg and used everyday objects such as clothing, bags or the like to carry his works of art.

Social projects

Bürmann's social commitment began in 1997 when he started the campaigns “Celebrities paint for children with AIDS” and “Children paint a world” with 100 children from a total of 27 countries.

In 2000, Frank Bürmann became a children's ambassador for Lower Saxony as part of the Lower Saxony project “Aktion Kinder”, together with Andreas Aguilar , the 1989 world gymnastics champion, and Julia Zwehl , the national hockey goalkeeper at the time.

For the “Kinderland Niedersachsen” project, a joint project with the Lower Saxony state government, Bürmann took on the design of the images.

In the years that followed, his commitment to charitable causes and children ranged from supporting the NCL Foundation to dealing with small groups individually.
