Frank Bowden

Sir Frank Bowden, 1st Baronet (born January 30, 1848 in Devon , † April 25, 1921 ), was the founder of the bicycle manufacturer Raleigh .

At the age of 24 he had success in the stock business. When he returned from Hong Kong , he was seriously ill and his doctor predicted that he had an estimated six months to live. On the doctor's advice, Bowden began riding a bicycle . When this enabled him to recover from his illness, he took over the company where he had bought his bike. In December 1888 he founded the Raleigh Bicycle Company, which eventually rose to become the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world in 1896.

It is often associated with the invention of the Bowden cable . In fact, it was invented in 1896 by Ernest Monnington Bowden and produced by Frank Bowden from 1902.

He was accepted as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and temporarily held the office of Justice of the Peace . On June 23, 1915 he was given the hereditary title of Baronet , of Nottingham in the County of Nottingham . When he died in 1921, his son Harold Bowden (1880-1960) inherited his title of nobility.
