Frank J. Coppa

Frank J. Coppa (born July 18, 1937 in New York City ) is an American historian.

Life

Frank J. Coppa attended Brooklyn College (BA 1960) and the Catholic University of America , where he received his doctorate in 1966 with the dissertation Giolitti and Industrial Italy: An Analysis of the Interrelationship Between Giolitti's Economic Policy and His Political Program . In 1964/65 he conducted research in Italy on a Fulbright grant .

Coppa taught from 1965 at St. John's University in New York , where he became an associate professor in 1970 and a professor in 1979. In 2010 he retired. Coppa did research on a number of Italian politicians such as Mazzini , Antonelli , Cavour and Garibaldi . He wrote a biography of Columbus . He edited the Encyclopedia of the Vatican and the Papacy and revised all articles on the Popes and Anti-Popes for the online edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica and the articles of all the Popes from the Renaissance to Gregory XVI. for the Catholic Encyclopedia . He wrote several pope biographies and took a stand in the anti-Semitism debate in the Catholic Church. Coppa was recognized by the American Catholic Historical Association for his research.
