Bambi Awards 2001
The 53rd Bambi Awards took place on November 15, 2001 in the Estrel Convention Center in Berlin . It was moderated by Axel Bulthaupt . The event was broadcast live on ARD for the first time .

The special Bambi
Thomas Gottschalk had already won Bambis in 1983 , 1984 and 1987 . However, when the Bunte called him “sausage” in an article in 1988, he returned the three prizes. In 2001 Gottschalk appeared again at a Bambi award to present his friend Günther Jauch with the trophy. Then Jauch informed the surprised Gottschalk that he would receive the special Bambi. He also got his first three Bambis back.
The audience Bambi
The audience Bambi 2001 was searched for in the Best Talk Show category . The award went to Sabine Christiansen , who prevailed against Sandra Maischberger , Reinhold Beckmann and Johannes B. Kerner with 34.9% of the votes .
The charity Bambi
The Charity Bambis were awarded in 2001 for the provision of medical aid in Afghanistan . In 1989 the nurse Karla Schefter set up an infirmary in Chaki Wardak , an area without medical care until then, which she expanded into a hospital. Interplast Germany eV operated two hospitals in Afghanistan. German doctors and medical specialists performed thousands of operations there during their vacation. The Bambi went to Heinrich Schoeneich on behalf of the company.
World Trade Center
Two Bambis were awarded for the reactions to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 . One went to retired New York firefighter Robert "Bob" Beckwith, who had helped rescue his former colleagues.
The Bambi for politics went to New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani . However, due to the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 a few days earlier, he was unable to attend the award ceremony and sent a video message. In his place, the New York actress Marisa Berenson appeared at the awards ceremony. She had lost her sister Berry in the attacks.
