Frank Marcus

Frank Ulrich Marcus (born June 30, 1928 in Breslau , Germany , † August 5, 1996 in London ) was a British playwright and theater critic .

Life

Frank Marcus was born into a Jewish family in Wroclaw, Silesia. In 1939 he emigrated to London, where he studied fine arts at Saint Martin's School of Art after attending Anna Essinger's Bunce Court School in Otterden . As an actor, writer and set designer, he then worked for several theater groups before making his debut as a playwright with Minuet For Stuffed Birds . He celebrated his greatest success with the 1964 premiere of The Killing of Sister George . The story was performed on Broadway in 1966 and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play. With Beryl Reid and Susannah York in the leading roles, the play was filmed in 1968 by Robert Aldrich under the title The Double Life of Sister George .

In addition to writing over 20 plays, Marcus also worked as a theater critic and translator. He translated several of Arthur Schnitzler's pieces into English. From 1968 to 1978 he worked as a theater critic for the Sunday Telegraph .

He was married to the actress Jacqueline Sylvester , who played the leading role in his debut play, until her death in 1993. He died of pulmonary embolism on August 5, 1996 after prolonged Parkinson's disease at the age of 68, leaving behind a son and two daughters.
