Beryl Reid
Beryl Elizabeth Reid (born June 17, 1919 in Hereford , England , † October 13, 1996 in London , England) was a British actress .
Life
After attending various schools - such as the Lady Barne House School in Manchester and the Levenshulme Girls' School - Beryl Reid initially worked as a saleswoman in Manchester's renowned Kendal Milne’s department store . In addition, Beryl Leid performed self-written skits and programs on small stages, which earned her an engagement at the Bridlington Theater during a talent competition .
During the Second World War, Reid worked as a writer and comedian in the troop support. She then went on tour across England with the Dagenham Girl Pipers . Then she found an artistic home with the radio. She wrote 472 skits for a single season of the Half Past Eight Show alone. She also worked for the programs Variety's Bandbox and Workers' Playtime at the BBC and was hired for the successful BBC radio comedy Educating Archie with the character of the school girl "Monica", which she wrote herself .
In addition, she went on tour with various artists (such as Max Wall and Henry Hall ). In 1965 she took on the lead role in Michael Codron's tragic comedy The Killing of Sister George about the decline of one of the leading actresses in a radio soap opera. Since the play was controversial for the conditions of the sixties with its clearly lesbian characters, Reid left England to play the role on New York's Broadway . This earned her not only a Tony Award , but also the lead role in the film adaptation of the material alongside Susannah York , directed by Robert Aldrich . For her performance in the feature film Das Doppelleben der Sister George (1968) she received a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress - Drama a year later , but had to admit defeat to the American Joanne Woodward ( The Love of a Summer ).
This role represented a turning point in Beryl Reid's career: if she was previously committed to comedies and caricaturing characters, from then on she was able to show her multifaceted skills, which gave her access to other role subjects. In 1974 she took part in a production of Romeo and Juliet at the National Theater , was part of the Royal Shakespeare Company ensemble , and played in Joe Orton's Entertaining Mr. Sloane ( Be nice to Mr. Sloane ) first on stage and later on Starring in the Hollywood version, appeared in the drama The Bells of St. Trinians , in the musical Star! and in comedies like No Sex please, we're British on.
She also took on numerous roles in television productions, such as in the adaptation of John le Carré's agent novel Agent on his own behalf alongside Alec Guinness , as a grandmother in the youth series The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole and as the mother of the criminal psychologist Dr. Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald ( Robbie Coltrane ) in the crime series For All Cases Fitz .
In 1984 Beryl Reid wrote her memoir under the title So Much Love . Two years later she was honored with the Order of the British Empire for her artistic merits .
Beryl Reid was married twice. Both marriages - to producer Bill Worsley and musician Derek Franklin - ended in divorce.
