Frank Melzer

Frank Melzer (born November 14, 1960 - August 27, 2018 in Berlin ) was a soccer player in the GDR . In their highest soccer class, the GDR Oberliga , he played for 1. FC Union Berlin . For the GDR junior national team, he played four international matches.

Melzer joined the youth department of 1. FC Union Berlin in 1973 at the age of twelve through the East Berlin company sports associations (BSG) Lokomotive Schöneweide and the Berlin Academy of Sciences. From 1978 he played for Union in the junior league and was discovered there for the GDR junior national team. On May 23, 1978 he came to his first junior international match when he was used as a midfielder in the encounter Poland - GDR (2: 3). By 1979 he played three more internationals with the junior selection.

Melzer played for the first time in the men's team of 1. FC Union on February 18, 1978. In the league game Union Berlin - 1. FC Magdeburg (0: 4) he was substituted on in the 73rd minute. He had another league appearance this season on matchday 19, when he was a midfielder in the starting eleven and played one half. For the season 1978/79 Melzer was officially nominated for the league team, but was not used and instead played in the junior league. Nevertheless, he was also reported again for the first team for the 1979/80 season, but was only used for the remainder of the season from matchday 21. Then Union rose for two seasons in the GDR league . During this time Melzer played only nine point games for the first team, in addition, he played with Union II in the third-class East Berlin district league . In the promotion round to the league in the spring of 1982, however, he was used in five of the eight relegation games and contributed to the fact that Union could return to the league. The new coach Harry Nippert nominated Melzer again for the league season 1982/83, but only let him play for 30 minutes on the 5th match day. In the second half of 1983 Melzer was given to the GDR league club Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt . After his return, the new coach Karl-Heinz Burwieck put his trust in him and let him play as a striker in the league team for the remainder of the season from matchday 17. Melzer thanked them with two goals, but couldn't prevent Union from being relegated again at the end of the season. In the GDR league season 1984/85 Karl Schäffner took over the coaching office and ordered Melzer back into the 2nd team. Only in November 1984 was Melzer von Schäffner as a substitute in the forward Frankfurt / O point game. II - 1. FC Union (2: 1) used in the 1st team. This operation was Melzer's 37th and also the last competitive game for the 1st team. He was used 19 times in the major league and scored three goals. He also played three cup games and was used 15 times in the GDR league.

In the 1985/86 season Melzer played for BSG Motor Ludwigsfelde in the Potsdam district league and was district champion with her. He then returned to Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt and played there again in the GDR league. In November 1987 Melzer was called up to serve in the army for six months and during this time he played football for the Vorwärts Fünfeichen army sports community in the Neubrandenburg district league. From May to June 1988 he played again for Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt and then moved to the newly promoted GDR league Stahl Hennigsdorf and ended his career as a football player there.
