Frank Neubauer, son of a self-employed master lettering painter, learned the profession of lettering painter from 1955 to 1958 under Werner Tschichold and worked in this profession until 1963. He attended evening high school from 1959 and graduated from high school in 1963.

From 1963 he studied art education and German at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig and passed his state examination in 1967. From 1967 to 1971 he completed a degree in applied graphics at the Leipzig University of Graphics and Book Art , a. a. with Heinz Wagner and Walter Schiller . In 1971 he received his diploma for his studies.

From 1967 to 2006 he was an artistic teacher at the Institute for Art Education at the University of Leipzig . His subjects were painting , graphics , commercial graphics , type design , typography and photography . He became senior assistant in 1976. In 1983 he was appointed lecturer and in 1987 professor with artistic teaching activities for commercial graphics at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig. In 2006 he stopped teaching.

As a lecturer in the artistic training of teachers and art mediators at the Leipzig Institute for Art Education, he was able to implement the unity of teaching and art in a wide variety of ways and, since 1987, has made a name for himself as part of his professorship, which is unique at East German universities, with artistic teaching activities for commercial graphics.

Neubauer has been a freelance artist as a commercial artist and graphic designer since 1967.

From 1975 to 1990 he worked with Jutta Damm-Fiedler and Jochen Fiedler in the group plus group.

Graphic design

In his formal language, Neubauer places particular emphasis on clarity and objectivity - a design attitude that ties in with the tradition of the Bauhaus and the Russian constructivists , among other things . The spectrum of work is extremely varied and ranges from graphic advertising for various organizations to book, poster and calendar design to the development of visual appearances. Poster art is a special domain of his work . He was five times the winner of the "100 best posters of the year in the GDR" .

Design pedagogy

As head of the theory and practice department of design and member of the management team of the Institute for Art Education at the University of Leipzig (institute director from 1989 to 1992), Neubauer made a significant contribution from 1992 to further developing the traditional art education training at the University of Leipzig. He combined the theoretical, practical and didactic teaching of the fields of the fine arts in an equal and relational way with the fields of applied arts and design. In his teaching activities, he incorporated his diverse professional experience as a graphic designer and art director and brought the students closer to practical relevance.
